In this photo, you can clearly see that we are about to violate the
child labor laws, so we had to confiscate the camera. Just kidding!! That's my brother Ken and his 2 sons Andy and Will, who
are studying to become supervisors. They did a fine job.
Here, we see my son Derrick and Jerry Agee screeding off the concrete
for us. Joe Fox made the mistake of walking by, so we put him to work as well. Turns out he needed some of the extra concrete
for something anyhow, so he got what was left.
Here's me and my brother going back over some spots, while John Rossington
lays the finish float to the sidewalk. Notice how we went from 2 supervisors in training to 4. Amazing how that happens.
Here we have John Walker brooming the concrete, John Rossington floating
the concrete, and Joe Fox supervising. Actually, there were alot of us supervising at this point, we just chose to stay out
of the camera view.
Ahhhhhhh, the look of rejection. If you've never put in a sidewalk,
just getting to the point where you can get the forms in is more work than it ought to be.
What could be so difficult you might ask? TREE ROOTS!!! There were
plenty of them in the way on this one, and this pile is only part of them.
Just when we were about to lose hope, Jerry Agee shows
up with the Kubota to save us from alot of digging and chopping. You
can't see it from this angle, but he was wearing a cape. Just look at the concentration on his face........amazing!! This
guy was focused like laser.
Okay, so he didn't have a cape. Regardless of that, he saved us from
about 6 hours of digging with a shovel. He also brought an axe, chains, and his electric chain saw, which made the job almost
enjoyable.
After some "discussion" about how well the job was going,
Jerry offered up the keys to the Kubota to John Walker, to see if he could do better.
Here we have some more "discussion" between a smaller guy
(me) with an axe, and a bigger guy (John) with a shovel. This should be fairly evenly matched.
I'm gonna go out on a limb, and say that John was thinking "What
the hell was I thinking" when this picture was taken. For the record, there weren't many breaks by anybody who was working
on this, we stayed at it pretty hard.
It would appear that I'm chopping out a root with an axe in this
picture, but the reality is that I know enough to look busy when there's a camera pointed at me. That shovel kept falling
over, so John decided to hold it up.
This is actually a welcome sight. The homeowner did this for me,
and I can't express how much help it was to not have to take the old sidewalk out myself.
Yet another violation of the child labor laws. My nephews wanted
to help haul the old sidewalk away, and they seemed to enjoy doing it.
How the tires didn't pop is beyond me, but my brother managed
to get over half of the old sidewalk in the back of his truck.
Time to unload before the tires do explode. There was a prize for
who could chuck the biggest piece the farthest.
Here's a photo of all of the concrete sidewalks I have removed so
far. Okay, it's not, it's actually the concrete pile at the sewer treatment plant. I'd like to thank Sid for allowing me to
get rid of the old sidewalks out there, I appreciate it.
Here's one for the ladies. This is my brother Ken, and he's looking!!!!!

BUSTED!!!! Walker and Agee were sitting down on the job again, so
I fired them. Just Kidding!!
Remember that cup of water Jerry was holding in the last picture?
He dumped it on himself to make it look like sweat, then begged for his job back, so I let him work.
When you suck at every aspect of concrete work, you get stuck edging
it. I still have alot to learn!!!
Yet another masterpiece of concrete sidewalk work!!! The second sidewalk
from this one is the first sidewalk we did. While we were doing that one, Bud McCarthy stopped down and asked if I'd do his
sidewalk as well. That's all it takes. If you don't believe me, ask Bud yourself. I was glad to do it, and I'm sure he was
glad to have it done. I'd like to give another big thanks to my crew who helped on this one as well.
You're probably wondering how many times we can violate the child
labor laws. The answer is alot. For some reason, we just can't keep Will from shoveling.
John Rossington stopped by to help. After digging until our arms
were sore, we decided to turn this work back over to the kids..........
This would be by far, the biggest violation of child labor in history.
Here we have Kyle and Lily. As much as we wanted them to shovel this out for us, we decided that maybe they should just sit
there and look cute. Mission Accomplished!!!
Holy Cow!!! It's the infamous Wonderbread!!! He's the fattest brother
I have, and he showed up to help as well. I know, after looking at him, you're wondering how Kyle and Lily turned out so cute.
Everybody else is wondering too.
Look at the guns on that guy!! After several more hours of digging
and setting the forms, we were done for the night.
Could you possibly think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning
than pouring concrete? So can I. However, I haven't seen a sidewalk pour itself, so it's up to the crew to get it done.
Here we have my brother Ken and I making sure that we get the concrete
to within one millionth of an inch at the forms. We ended up just a little off.
There's just something about the way that sunlight reflects off of
concrete that makes you want to keep pouring it. I'll call this picture "Twilight at the jobsite".
Time for the rookies like me to get out of the way, and let the guys
who know what they're doing go to work. Ken and John are now certified master concrete floaters. I knight thee, Sir Floats
Alot.
Just starting the finish floating, and all was going well, when suddenly..............
The Inspector General (aka my wife) showed up to make sure everything
was going okay, and to borrow some money. For some reason, I just can't get as excited about a garage sale as my wife does.
Hey Sloopy, look!!!! It's Bruce Truka, working on a sidewalk with
us. Maybe now you'll shut up. My wife wasn't buying the "I'm busy" line that I was feeding her, so I caved in and
gave her the ATM card.
Just a little more edging, cutting, and sweeping up around the area,
and................
Ta Da!!! Another masterpiece of a sidewalk. Another big Thank You
and a round of applause goes out to my brothers Ken and Scott, their kids, John Rossington, Jerry Agee, and Bruce Truka. I'd
also like to thank all of those in the neighborhood who put up with us tearing stuff up, and for moving their cars when the
cement truck showed up. If there was ever a job that was truly a "team effort", this was it.
